The Boab Brewing Company is collaborating with as many local Kimberley Communities and their aspiring business people to get their Kimberley based products to market. Our first collaboration was with Bindam Mie (Bush Food in the Nyul Nyul language).
Bindam Mie is owned and operated by Robert Dann, who had successfully created (or recreated from traditional knowledge) an extensive range of products and was selling them at the Broome courthouse markets.
Richard met Robert in 2017 and together since then they have been figuring out ways to create job opportunities for Kimberley families on country.
The magic of mother nature
Together we have achieved Bindam Mie’s and Robert’s dream of sharing his childhood Boab drink with others. Since late 2018, his range has been sold both in his home town of Broome and in the City of Fremantle in the south west suburbs of Perth, Western Australia.
Pictured below is Robert’s extensive range of products made from local endemic species and harvested by the local traditional owners.
The product that captured the imagination of everyone was the Boab Beer, which featured on the ABC in 2018 (Boab beer maker among Indigenous business owners tasting success in WA’s Kimberley).
Robert and Richard have also created a non-alcoholic Boab and Wild Ginger Beer, utilising the local Maarr grass and Boab pod flesh.
One of the magical properties of the Boab flesh is that is both a light concentrated nutrient dense ingredient that is economical to transport and when added with water becomes swollen again.
Mother nature has provided us fellas with a magical raw ingredient. The healthy natural fibre becomes infused in drinks just like normal fruit juices but in reverse. It also means that we are not transporting bulky water in glass bottles around the country, which means our goals of sustainability remain achievable.
We look forward to bringing the bush tucker flavours of Western Australia to your table!
